Zelenskyy allows referendum in case of real compromise with Russia

All possible agreements to end the war should be signed by the presidents and ratified by parliament or approved in a referendum. This was stated by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with Western media.

According to him, the Ukrainian people went through a full-scale war, so It is the citizens who have the right to say «yes» or «no» regarding any arrangements.

When a referendum is possible

The President noted that national referendum may occur within several months, but only on condition:

  • appearances a real compromise with Russia;

  • formation of a clear peace agreement;

  • political readiness of the parties to end the war.

If these conditions are not met, the referendum will not be considered.

What it means

Zelenskyy's statement shows his intention:

  • provide possible arrangements maximum legitimacy;

  • to engage society in a key decision about the country's future;

  • avoid political disputes after the war.
