China has created a «chip thread» for «smart clothes»

The new chip is integrated into polymer filament, whose thickness smaller than a human hair. Nevertheless, it is capable of performing basic calculations, storing data and processing signals.

Unlike classic silicon chips, the technology:

  • is not rigid and flat

  • easy to bend and fold

  • can be woven directly into the tissue

The developers emphasise that this opens the way to electronics that physically behaves like textiles, rather than a traditional chip.

What the invention allows

According to Xinhua, the new technology can be used in several key areas:

  • «Smart clothing, capable of displaying images, changing fabric properties and responding to touch

  • VR gloves with realistic tactile feedback

  • Soft brain implants, that can process neurosignals without hard contact with brain tissue

Why it matters

Analysts note that the emergence of such «chip threads» may become a breakthrough in the field of wearable electronics, bioengineering and virtual reality. Flexibility and minimal size reduce the risk of damage and make the technology suitable for long-term use.

The development also fits into China's strategy to Reducing dependence on traditional silicon chips and the development of alternative electronic platforms.

Context.

China is actively investing in artificial intelligence, semiconductors and bioelectronics. The creation of functional chips in the form of filaments may become one of the areas where the country will gain technological advantage in the global market.
