Ukraine completes testing of new FP-9 ballistic missile
Ukraine completes final tests of a new FP-9 ballistic missile developed by Fire Point. This is reported by the DW with reference to developer data and open sources.
What is known about the FP-9 missile
This is a new ballistic system created by the company that previously developed the «Flamingo».
According to published information, the range of the FP-9 is approximately 800-850 km, and the mass of the warhead is about 800 kg. These characteristics theoretically allow the missile to hit targets in Russia, including Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The developers also note that the missile has high speed of over 1200 metres per second, This makes it more effective at hitting remote targets than other types of weapons.
Stage of readiness and possible adoption
Fire Point reported that previous delays were due to organisational difficulties, which have now been resolved.
As of now, the following are ongoing final tests, after which the missile can be adopted for service this month.
Context.
The development of Ukraine's missile programmes is taking place against the backdrop of a full-scale war with Russia and constant attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. Strengthening long-range capabilities is seen as one of the key factors of deterrence and defence.
