In Ivano-Frankivsk, car traffic is offered on the principle of even and odd numbers
The mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk proposed the idea of restricting traffic based on the principle of number plates: on even days, cars with even number plates could move around the city, and on odd days, cars with odd number plates could move around the city.
What does the offer include
According to the mayor, this approach could work:
reduce the load on the roads;
reduce traffic jams in the city centre;
improve the transport situation during peak hours.
Similar models of temporary traffic restrictions have previously been used in some cities around the world during environmental crises or traffic congestion.
Is it realistic to implement the system
At the same time, the mayor acknowledged that the implementation of such an initiative is difficult from an organisational and legal point of view.
Therefore, we are considering an option under which the system could operate on a voluntary basis, without severe penalties.
Context.
The problem of congestion in Ukrainian cities is exacerbated by:
growth in the number of private vehicles;
limited street capacity;
Insufficient development of public transport and parking infrastructure.
The city authorities are looking for various solutions to optimise traffic and reduce traffic congestion.
