Law enforcers detained a group of Odesa-based officers who were stealing almost $100,000 from cryptocurrency wallets of Ukrainians and foreigners every month. The offenders lured victims into fake investment projects via Telegram and used malicious code to automatically write off all assets. They face up to 12 years in prison for their actions.

How the cryptocurrency theft scheme worked

The Odesa-based officers organised a network of Telegram channels offering fake investment projects with high returns. After attracting victims, the fraudsters sent special links or files containing malicious code. This code allowed all assets to be automatically debited from users' crypto wallets, often without their knowledge.

Monthly losses and the scale of the crime

According to preliminary estimates, the criminals stole about $100,000 every month. The victims include both Ukrainians and foreigners who have fallen victim to fraudulent schemes. Law enforcement officials note that such incidents are becoming more frequent as the popularity of cryptocurrencies in Ukraine.

Investigation and possible punishment

All suspects have been detained and charged with organising a fraudulent scheme and embezzlement on a large scale. They face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property. Law enforcement officials urge citizens to be careful and not to trust dubious offers in messengers.
