Ukraine and Bulgaria are working to launch a direct passenger train through Romania. This was announced by Vice Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba. The first test flight is possible as early as the summer of 2026.
Preparing a new route
Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania are coordinating the launch of a trilateral railway connection. The parties are currently agreeing on the technical and logistical details of the new route.
According to Oleksiy Kuleba, coordination is underway between the railway operators of the three countries. The first test run is planned for the summer of 2026.
Goals of launching the railway connection
The new railway route should provide:
- facilitating travel between Ukraine and EU countries;
- improving transport links with the Balkan region;
- an alternative to air travel and motor vehicles.
Regular flights are seen as a prospect for further development of the route.
Context.
Since the outbreak of full-scale war, Ukraine has made it a priority to develop international rail links. New routes allow:
- reduce the load on road checkpoints;
- expand the mobility of citizens;
- strengthen integration with the European transport system.
