The Security Service of Ukraine blocked an attempted terrorist attack in a coffee shop in the centre of Rivne. The offender, recruited by Russian special services, was detained red-handed while planting a homemade bomb in the central park.
Details of the SBU operation
According to the investigation, the detainees are resident of Zhytomyr, who previously suffered from drug addiction. The man manufactured the explosives in a rented apartment, following instructions provided by Russian special services. The explosive device was disguised in a saucepan and stuffed with nuts to increase its destructive effect.
The plan of the occupiers
The operation involved the remote detonation of a bomb by calling a phone attached to the explosive. For better secrecy, the detainee appeared at the scene in military uniform. This indicates the serious intentions and preparedness of the offender.
Legal implications
The detainee faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property. The SBU continues investigative actions and emphasises the importance of combating terrorism at all levels.
