Court extends Ihor Kolomoisky's detention for another two months

Igor Kolomoisky will remain in custody until at least 25 March - this decision was made by the Pecherskyi District Court of Kyiv. The court granted the prosecution's motion to extend the term of detention.

The court did not uphold the defence's motion to change the measure of restraint to a more lenient one.

Which episodes are considered

The businessman is suspected of a number of criminal offences in several proceedings. These include cases related to financial transactions around PrivatBank, as well as with the activities of the companies Ukrnafta and Ukrtatnafta.

In international jurisdictions, certain proceedings related to the bank's former operations have previously been considered in High Court of England and Wales in civil disputes. Some of the cases in the US also involve financial transactions and assets. The investigations are ongoing and final court decisions in the criminal cases are pending.

Arguments of the prosecution and defence

The prosecution insisted on the need to extend the detention, citing the risks of influencing the investigation and other procedural factors. The defence requested a change in the measure of restraint, pointing out that there were no grounds for further detention in the pre-trial detention centre.

The court agreed with the prosecutors' arguments and upheld the current preventive measure.

Reactions and comments

The case has a significant public outcry and is actively commented on by political observers and experts. In particular, political scientist Oleg Posternak in his public comments emphasises the importance of proving cases in court and legal responsibility within the law.

Experts emphasise that only a court verdict that has entered into force can establish the final conclusions on guilt or innocence.
