UOC-MP monks suspected of rape in Kharkiv region

Two monks of the UOC-MP in the Kharkiv region have been notified of being suspected of sexual abuse of a minor from the church choir.

Police in the Kharkiv region have served two UOC-MP monks with a notice of suspicion of sexual offences against a minor. According to the investigation, both suspects committed sexual acts against a girl from the church choir.

The essence of the case

According to the National Police, a 52-year-old monk of the UOC-MP invited an underage girl who sang in a church choir to his home. He got her drunk, took naked photos of her and committed sexual acts.

The second defendant, a 24-year-old hieromonk, in the autumn of 2024, while drunk, also committed sexual acts against the same child.

Investigation and punishment

Both suspects were served a notice of suspicion of committing sexual crimes against a minor. The case is being investigated by the National Police of Kharkiv region.

They face up to 15 years in prison with disqualification to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years.

Context.

Cases of sexual violence in religious organisations have recently been gaining publicity in Ukraine. Law enforcement officials are calling for all such crimes to be reported.
