Germany proposes NATO mission to protect Greenland

Germany has proposed that NATO countries create a separate mission to protect Greenland and strengthen the Alliance's presence in the Arctic region. This was reported by Bloomberg with reference to diplomatic sources.

The initiative comes amid rising geopolitical tensions around the Arctic and increased activity by Russia and China.

Details of the case

The proposed mission can be created by analogy with the operation Baltic Sentry, which operates in the Baltic Sea.

  • The working title of the project is Arctic Sentry.

  • Formally, the mission involves monitoring NATO's security interests in the region.

  • Possible tasks include monitoring sea routes, airspace and military activity near Greenland.

  • The use of NATO ships, aircraft and intelligence assets is discussed.

It is also reported that German Foreign Minister will soon visit Washington, where he will hold talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the security situation around Greenland.

Context.

Greenland is increasingly in the centre of international attention due to its strategic location, access to Arctic routes and natural resources. Earlier, the United States made statements about the need to strengthen control over the region, which caused concern among European allies.

NATO countries consider the Arctic to be one of the key areas of future confrontation with Russia and China, particularly in the areas of military presence, logistics and energy routes.
