The Israeli military is discussing the creation of a buffer zone on the Lebanese border. The move is seen as a security measure following recent incidents. This practice has been used in previous Israeli operations in Lebanon.
Buffer zone plan
Israel has announced its intention to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon. The goal is to protect the northern regions of Israel from attacks by Lebanese armed groups.
According to the Israeli military, the zone may extend several kilometres into Lebanese territory. The final parameters and timing of the plan have not yet been determined.
Historical experience
Israel has already created buffer zones in Lebanon in 1978 and 1982. The last occupation of southern Lebanon lasted until 2000.
At that time, the buffer zone was controlled by Israeli troops and their allies from the South Lebanese Army. After Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon, the security situation on the border remained tense.
Context.
In recent months, regular shelling and other incidents have been recorded on the border between Israel and Lebanon. Israel believes that a buffer zone could reduce risks to civilians.
The Lebanese side and international organisations have previously criticised such initiatives, pointing to violations of sovereignty.
