Norway limits temporary protection for Ukrainian men of military age
The Ministry of Justice of Norway has announced its intention to tighten the rules for granting temporary protection to Ukrainian male citizens aged from 18 to 60 years old.
Details of the case
Under the new approaches, most Ukrainian men in this age group will no longer receive automatic temporary protection. At the same time, there are some exceptions that will be determined by the authorities on an individual basis.
Instead of a simplified procedure, such applicants will be able to apply for asylum under the general rules, which provides for a standardised review of each case.
Government position
The Norwegian government explains the decision by the need to balance the state's capacity to accept and integrate newcomers.
They stress that a country should not accept more people than it can effectively integrate into society and the labour market.
Context.
Norway, like a number of other European countries, has recently been reconsidering its approach to accepting refugees amid Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine and growing migration pressure.
It is expected that the changes may affect the structure of new applications from Ukrainian citizens planning to travel to the Scandinavian countries.
