Swedish intelligence calls Russia the biggest threat to NATO and the Baltic region

Russia remains the greatest threat to the security of Sweden and the North Atlantic Alliance. This is stated in the annual report of the military intelligence Swedish Armed Forces.

The document notes that Moscow's increasingly risky behaviour could lead to a dangerous escalation in the Baltic region. The potential threats include:

  • violation of airspace;

  • sabotage operations;

  • cyberattacks against the states of the region.

Estonian intelligence data

In turn, intelligence Estonia in its annual report reported on a sharp increase in military production in Russia.
In particular, the production of artillery systems and ammunition increased by about 17 times since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

At the same time, analysts see no signs of a direct Russian attack on Estonia or other NATO countries in the near future.

The security context in Europe

The warnings of the Scandinavian and Baltic intelligence agencies come against the backdrop of Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine and the general increase in Russian military activity in Europe.

Countries in the region are increasing their defence budgets, strengthening cooperation within NATO, and preparing for possible hybrid threats that may combine military, cyber, and sabotage pressure.
