The West has lost the industrial race to China and Russia - Rubio
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the West had made a strategic mistake by abandoning the development of its own industry.
According to him, the United States has long lived under the dangerous illusion that a strong industry is no longer necessary. As a result, a significant number of American industries have been closed, and the country has become heavily dependent on imports.
«A »costly mistake" for the economy
Rubio called this policy a «stupid idea» that ignored historical experience and basic patterns of state development.
In his opinion, deindustrialisation has led to:
the loss of millions of middle-class jobs;
transferring production abroad;
transfer of control over critical supply chains to competitors and adversaries of the West.
According to the Secretary of State, these processes have had long-term negative consequences for the US economic security.
Geopolitical dimension
In parallel with the weakening of the industrial base of the West, China and Russia have been actively building up their own production capacities.
This allowed them to strengthen their economic positions and gain additional tools of influence in global competition.
Lessons for Ukraine
Experts note that similar conclusions are relevant for Ukraine, especially in the context of war and the need to rapidly develop the defence industry.
Maintaining and expanding domestic production is seen as a key element of economic sustainability and national security.
