SBU eliminates Russian GRU killer and detains accomplices

The SBU eliminated a Russian GRU killer who planned to kill prominent Ukrainians. More than 10 of his accomplices were detained.

The Security Service of Ukraine reported the elimination of a Russian GRU assassin who attempted to commit attempts on Sergiy Sternenko and other famous people. During the arrest, the offender opened fire. Law enforcement officers also detained more than 10 of his accomplices.

Elimination of a killer and detention of accomplices

The SBU reported that during the special operation Russian GRU assassin eliminated, who put up armed resistance during his arrest. The SBU detained more than 10 people who were part of the group of accomplices.

The perpetrators were preparing assassination attempts on prominent Ukrainians, including Serhiy Sternenko and other public figures.

Plans and goals of the killer

According to the SBU, the eliminated killer was a native of the temporarily occupied part of Donetsk region. His task was to kill public figure Serhiy Sternenko and Russian Ilya Bogdanov, who has been fighting on the side of Ukraine since 2014.

The killer was to make improvised explosive devices and plant them under cars or near the targets' homes. In the event of an unsuccessful detonation, he was ordered to shoot the victims at point blank range.

Context.

The SBU regularly reports on the detection and neutralisation of Russian agent networks in Ukraine. Ilya Bogdanov, who was also the subject of an assassination attempt, is a former FSB officer who defected to Ukraine in 2014.

Russian special services have repeatedly organised attempts to assassinate Ukrainian soldiers, volunteers and public figures.
