On 25 April, the US radio station HFGCS and the Russian analogue UVB-76 simultaneously broadcast for the first time. Both transmitted encrypted messages, which may indicate the transmission of high-level emergency orders.
American HFGCS transmits encrypted message
On 25 April, a 21-character encrypted message was broadcast on HFGCS (High Frequency Global Communications System) frequencies: «BRADFIELD 6CWCH7 6CWCH7F7TGFSUUJF2TGFS». This is the first recorded case of such a signal.
The HFGCS is known as a so-called «doomsday radio» used for emergency military communications, including the transmission of strategic level orders, including nuclear ones. The message has not yet been decrypted.
Russian analogue of UVB-76 goes on air
Almost simultaneously with the HFGCS, the Russian radio station UVB-76 («Buzzer») broadcast a message: «NZHTI 10071 BYKOCHERT 5912 3547». This is a rare case when both systems are activated at the same time.
UVB-76 is a Soviet and Russian emergency communication system known for its constant operation in a monotone signal mode. Messages are transmitted only in exceptional cases.
Possible causes of activation
Both signals were sent out globally, which may indicate increased alertness or a drill emergency scenarios. Experts note that such messages may be related to the transmission of strategic level orders, including nuclear ones.
There has been no official comment from the US or Russian governments on the reasons for the activation of the radio stations. Neither side has released a transcript of the content of the messages.
