State Border Guard Service spokesman Andriy Demchenko said that attempts to cross the Dniester on water scooters are on the rise. Such devices allow them to cross the river quickly and unnoticed, which complicates the work of border guards.
Fugitives use water scooters to cross the Dniester
Pros. information spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine Andriy Demchenko, According to Demchenko, there has been a recent increase in attempts to illegally cross the state border across the Dniester River using aqua scooters. According to Demchenko, these devices pull a person through the water and allow them to move faster under the surface, making the offenders less visible to border guards.
The use of aqua scooters indicates an increase in the creativity and technical equipment of the evaders. According to Demchenko, the Dniester is becoming an increasingly «popular» destination for those trying to illegally leave Ukraine bypassing official checkpoints.
Traditional routes remain relevant
Despite innovative approaches to crossing the border, traditional attempts to illegally cross through other areas remain frequent. In particular, violators continue to choose routes across the Tisza River, which has long been one of the main routes for smugglers.
Border guards note that each new method of crossing requires adaptation of law enforcement response methods. The use of water vehicles, especially those that can stay underwater, makes it difficult to detect violators and increases risks for both sides.
Technical features of water scooters
Aquascooters are special devices designed to move quickly through the water. They can pull a person under the surface, which reduces the likelihood of detection by the coastguard or observation posts.
The increased use of such devices indicates that smugglers are looking for new opportunities to circumvent enhanced border security measures. This, in turn, forces border guards to implement modern monitoring and response technologies.
Why it matters
Increase in the number of attempts illegal border crossing with the use of water scooters points to serious challenges for national security. Adaptation of offenders to new conditions requires constant improvement of control methods by border guards.
The use of modern devices for illegal crossing underlines the need to strengthen the technical equipment and training of SBGS personnel. This also indicates a change in the nature of the threats facing Ukraine under martial law.
