President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy put forward a tough demand to government officials and responsible agencies to ensure the procurement of missiles for Patriot air defence systems. The head of state gave his subordinates exactly one week to rectify the situation, threatening large-scale dismissals if they failed to do so.

Zelensky's ultimatum

If there is no full clarity on the implementation of the agreements by next Friday, the defence sector will face high-profile dismissals. As it turns out, even the basic legal steps for this critical defence contract have not yet been worked out.

«I have set a deadline of one week for all preparatory steps. I am counting on a report on Friday: either clarity on the implementation of our agreement on the Petriots or serious personnel conclusions,“ Volodymyr Zelenskyy said categorically.

Bureaucratic slowdown amid air threats

The situation with the procurement of additional missiles for air defence systems Patriot (ABM) has become acute due to internal delays in the approval of documents. Despite the fact that political agreements with international partners had been reached earlier, the executive branch delayed the process of legalising the agreements.

For Ukraine, which repels massive ballistic and cruise missile attacks on a daily basis, every day that delays the delivery of scarce anti-missile systems directly affects the safety of critical infrastructure and civilians.

Why Patriot missiles are critical for Ukraine

Patriot systems remain the only reliable shield against Russia's most dangerous missiles. However, their effectiveness depends entirely on the uninterrupted supply of expensive and high-tech munitions.

System characteristics Significance for Ukraine's defence
Ballistics interception The ability to shoot down supersonic missiles such as the Kinzhal and Iskander-M.
Range of action Protecting not only large cities (Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa) but also strategic energy facilities.
The logistical challenge The high cost and limited global production of missiles require immediate legal support of contracts by Ukraine.

Tough deadline: what to expect on Friday

Experts say that the president's public ultimatum shows his deep disappointment with the pace of work of the relevant ministry or defence agencies responsible for international arms procurement.

Friday's report will be crucial. If officials fail to demonstrate the signed legal algorithms and readiness to finalise the contract, Ukraine's defence sector will face high-profile personnel rotations. It is not yet officially disclosed whose seats have been shaken by the disruption of the preparation of the agreements, but it is clear that it is the top management of the relevant structures.
