The United States has announced a temporary easing of sanctions against Iran for 60 days, following peace talks. US President Donald Trump has warned Tehran of possible consequences should it fail to fulfil its obligations.

Briefly about the main points
  • The US has eased sanctions against Iran for 60 days.
  • Tehran has been given the opportunity to resume oil exports.
  • The talks took place in Switzerland, with Qatar and Pakistan taking part.
  • Trump has threatened Iran should it breach the agreement.
  • Iran denies some of the US’s claims regarding its nuclear programme.

The US has eased sanctions: what does this mean for Iran?

The US Treasury Department has announced a 60-day suspension of some sanctions against Iran, which came into effect on 23 June. Tehran is now able to sell oil and petroleum products, as well as receive payment for its supplies. This move marked the first tangible outcome of the negotiations between the US and Iran following the conclusion of a preliminary peace agreement last week. This was reported by reports agency Reuters.

Talks in Switzerland: a new roadmap

The talks took place at a Swiss resort Bürgenstock with Qatar and Pakistan acting as mediators. The parties have agreed on a roadmap that provides for the conclusion of a comprehensive peace agreement within the next 60 days. Agreements were also reached on a mechanism to cease hostilities in Lebanon between Israel and the group «Hezbollah». The negotiators paid particular attention to the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz — one of the most important routes for global oil trade.

Trump warns of the consequences

President of the United States Donald Trump stated that he was prepared to take decisive action if Tehran failed to comply with the terms of the agreement.

“If Iran fails to comply with the agreement or behaves inappropriately, I will do what I have to do,” Trump told reporters.

He also stated that Iran had agreed to inspections designed to confirm the peaceful nature of its nuclear programme.

Iran’s response to the US statements

Despite Washington’s optimistic assessments, Tehran has refuted some of the US statements. A spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Esmail Baghai stressed that the country had not, as yet, undertaken any new commitments regarding nuclear facilities. At the same time, the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that agreements had been reached on oil exports, the partial unfreezing of assets and the launch of an economic recovery programme.

Impact on the oil market

News of the negotiations and the partial easing of sanctions had a positive impact on investor sentiment. Following the announcement of the agreement, oil prices continued to fall. Analysts attribute this to reduced risks to global energy supplies and the prospect of increased Iranian oil exports to international markets.
