In the Moscow Region, 109 transformer stations were left without power following a night-time drone attack. More than 5,000 customers and 46 socially important facilities were left without electricity. Mosoblenergo reported damage to network equipment and emergency repair work, whilst the regional authorities confirmed damage to a substation in Elektrostal.
Briefly about the main points
- The power cut affected Orekhovo-Zuyevo and Likino-Dulyovo.
- The Pavlovo-Posad branch of the energy company has switched to a special operating regime.
- A transformer substation and a car have been damaged in Elektrostal.
- Russian sources have reported that more than 620 drones are heading towards the region.
Power companies are restoring the electricity supply in the eastern part of the region
The Pavlovo-Posad branch of «Mosoblenergo» has been operating under special arrangements since 05:30 on 18 August due to damage to equipment belonging to the higher-level electricity network organisation. The power cuts have affected transformer stations in the urban districts of Orekhovo-Zuyevo and Likino-Dulyovo.
The company is carrying out emergency repair work. They are trying to connect some customers to stand-alone generators to provide backup power.
Fires, damaged buildings and a logistics complex
Governor of the Moscow Region Andriy Vorobyov reported damage to a transformer substation and a car in Elektrostal. According to him, the most serious consequences were recorded in the Pavlovo-Posadsky District: a private house in the village of Kuznetsy was completely burnt down.
In Pavlovsky Posad, the roof of a block of flats caught fire and the residents were evacuated. Another fire broke out in a building on 1 May Street. Damage was also reported in Kolomna, Kotelniki, Ramenskoye and Bogorodskoye districts.
In the Atlant Park area, debris struck a logistics complex Wildberries. The company reported minor damage to the building and no damage to the goods.
The Russian authorities have reported hundreds of drones
Russian sources claim that between the evening of 17 August and the morning of 18 August, more than 620 drones were flying towards the Moscow region. The Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin reported that 180 UAVs had allegedly been destroyed in the capital region.
Vorobyov reported that more than 150 drones had, according to him, been shot down or neutralised by electronic warfare systems directly over the region. He named the Bogorodsky, Ramensky, Pavlovo-Posadsky, Orekhovo-Zuyevsky, Voskresensky, Stupinsky and Kolomensky districts, as well as Elektrostal.
As a result of attacks At least three people were injured, including a 10-year-old child. The figures for UAVs reported by Russian officials relate to different territories and are phrased differently, so they cannot be aggregated.
The power cuts did not affect the whole of Moscow
Confirmed power cuts are affecting the Moscow Region. According to «Mosoblenergo», the company operates networks in 36 municipalities across the region; therefore, the fact that one branch has switched to a special operating mode does not mean that the entire region is under emergency conditions.
The scale of the incident points to a significant localised failure in the eastern part of the Moscow Region: damage to equipment belonging to the higher-level network operator has simultaneously affected the distribution network. As of the morning of 18 August, there is no confirmation of a city-wide power cut in Moscow.
