Trump talks of peace, whilst Russia continues its missile strikes

On duty shelling of Kyiv took place against the backdrop of intensified diplomatic talks aimed at bringing the Russian-Ukrainian war to an end.

On 21 October, US President’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff held talks with Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg. Following these talks, the Russian side announced its readiness to resume trilateral meetings involving Ukraine, the US and the Russian Federation.

Washington is trying to speed up the negotiation process, whilst Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy supports holding meetings that could pave the way for direct talks between the leaders of the two countries.

However, whilst diplomats are discussing ways to bring the fighting to an end, the Russian army continues to attack Ukrainian towns and cities, particularly residential areas and civilian infrastructure.

The evening attack on Kyiv once again highlighted the gulf between diplomatic statements about peace and the reality faced by Ukrainians on a daily basis.
