The EU will combine companies' bids for gas purchases without Russia's participation

The European Union plans to restore a common natural gas procurement system, combining bids from European companies to speed up the transition away from Russian energy resources. This was reported by Reuters with reference to the European Commission's statement.

A common platform for energy security

European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen noted that in the coming weeks Brussels will launch a mechanism for joint gas demand formation, which will allow EU countries to receive «competitive and diversified supply».

According to him, this initiative is aimed at reducing prices, strengthening the EU's energy resilience and avoiding internal competition between member states for fuel supplies.

Refusal from Russian gas continues

After the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022, the EU significantly reduced its purchases of Russian gas, switching to supplies from Norway, the USA, Qatar and Algeria.
The new joint procurement system will be another step towards full Europe's energy independence from Moscow.
