On the evening of 6 November, Russian forces continued their drone attacks on the Zhytomyr region. Following an earlier strike on an energy facility in Zhytomyr, the electricity supply to Kyiv has deteriorated and water pressure in the city’s water mains has dropped. The mayor of the capital, Vitali Klitschko, reported on the consequences of the damage, whilst monitoring sources are recording a new threat from jet-powered UAVs to the Zhytomyr region.
Briefly about the main points
- Russian drones continued to attack the Zhytomyr region on the evening of 6 November.
- Earlier, a Russian strike damaged an energy facility in the Zhytomyr community.
- Klitschko reported a deterioration in the electricity supply and a drop in water pressure in Kyiv.
- Some of the capital’s pumping stations are being switched to backup power supplied by generators.
Russian drones continue to attack the Zhytomyr region
On Friday evening, Russian forces launched a new wave of attack drones towards the Zhytomyr region. Monitoring sources report the movement of jet-powered drones, particularly in the direction of Zhytomyr. The threat arose following the already confirmed damage to an energy facility in the regional capital.
Previously, the head of the Zhytomyr Regional State Administration Vitaliy Bunechko reported that the Russian attack had damaged energy infrastructure in the Zhytomyr community. Repair teams are on site, assessing the extent of the damage and determining the measures required to restore the electricity supply.
The situation is being exacerbated by repeated attacks on the region. On the night of 3 November, following Russian strikes, more than 180,000 customers in around 130 settlements in the Zhytomyr region were left without power. Over the following days, power company staff worked to repair the damaged infrastructure.
Klitschko had previously reported that the situation in Kyiv was deteriorating
Even before reports of a new wave of drones, the Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko stated that the damage to the power facility in Zhytomyr had already affected the operation of the capital’s infrastructure.
«Due to damage to an energy facility in Zhytomyr, the situation regarding the capital’s energy supply has deteriorated. Water pressure in Kyiv’s water supply system has also fallen,» the mayor said.
According to him, at stations where this is technically possible, «Kyivvodokanal»switches the equipment to generator power. This enables some of the pumping stations to continue operating during power cuts to the centralised electricity supply.".
The impact of the damage in Zhytomyr on Kyiv is linked to the operation of Ukraine’s integrated power system. The loss of individual power generation facilities or grid equipment may lead to further restrictions on the electricity supply in neighbouring regions.
Repeated power cuts pose a risk of further outages
A new wave of Russian drones poses an additional threat to the energy infrastructure in the Zhytomyr region, which has already sustained damage. Further attacks could complicate repair work and affect the stability of the electricity supply in the Zhytomyr and Kyiv regions and the capital.
At the same time, there have not yet been any official announcements regarding the introduction of new power cut schedules specifically due to the second evening attack.
Residents of the region are urged not to ignore air-raid sirens and to remain in shelters until the official all-clear is given.
