The Northern Bridge was closed following overnight shelling
Russian troops carried out the following operations overnight: several waves of ballistic strikes across the capital and the Kyiv region. Explosions were heard after 11.00 pm on 6 November, around 1.00 am and after 3.00 am. The Air Force reported missiles heading towards Kyiv and its suburbs, whilst the city authorities confirmed attacks on infrastructure.
During one of the waves of shelling, there were reports of rockets in the area of the North Bridge, which connects the right and left banks of the Dnieper. Subsequently Vitali Klitschko reported that the crossing had been damaged and that traffic restrictions had been introduced.
According to the mayor, experts are currently assessing the condition of the structure. Until the inspection is complete, the bridge remains closed to traffic in both directions. The nature of the damage, its impact on the load-bearing structures and the likely timeframe for reopening the bridge have not yet been specified.
Russia had already attacked the Northern Bridge in October
This is not the first time the crossing has been damaged as a result of Russian strikes. 3 October The Northern Bridge has already come under attack, during which the road surface and the trolleybus overhead lines were damaged. At the time, the city authorities temporarily closed the crossing from the left bank to the right bank, and public transport routes were rerouted.
Throughout October, Russian troops also launched repeated attacks on Southern Bridge Kyiv. Following the attack on 27 October, traffic across the crossing was halted, but by the end of the month it had been partially resumed, with one lane open in each direction for vehicles weighing up to 10 tonnes.
Further damage to the North Bridge is causing additional difficulties for transport links between the two sides of the capital. Drivers should take the road closures into account when planning their routes and keep an eye on updates from the city authorities.
