Brazil unveils the tallest statue of the Virgin Mary - 51 metres taller than Christ the Saviour
The state of São Paulo inaugurated the the tallest statue of the Virgin Mary in the country, height 51 metres. The monument immediately became one of the largest religious symbols in the world.
Details
A new statue:
21 metres higher, than the 30-metre-high statue of Christ the Saviour in Rio de Janeiro (without a pedestal);
5 metres higher, than the Statue of Liberty in New York (46 m);
is located on a panoramic site that has already become a tourist destination.
The local authorities expect the monument to become a new pilgrimage centre and increase tourist traffic to the region.
Context.
Brazil is one of the most religious countries in South America. The construction of large statues is a common tradition: the country already has more than 50 monuments to Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, but the new statue is absolute record holder.
