According to him, this is to ensure the «protection of Russian territories», but in fact the statement means an attempt to expand the area of control to the border areas of Ukraine - in particular Kharkiv, Sumy and Chernihiv regions.

The Kremlin's official theses on the «security zone» have appeared repeatedly throughout the year, but the current statement by the Russian leader directly signals a plan for escalation and official legitimisation of occupation intentions under the guise of «border protection».
