Finland says it is not ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees

Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo said that the country is not ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees. He said this in a commentary to Anadolu Agency after Finland was allegedly included in the Trump plan as a potential guarantor country.

Orpo stressed that his country was surprised to see Finland on the list.

«A security guarantee is something very, very serious. We are not ready to provide security guarantees, but we can help with security arrangements. The difference between them is huge,» the Prime Minister stressed.

What the Helsinki position means

The Finnish government is ready to support:

  • political consultations with Ukraine,

  • coordination within NATO and the EU,

  • participation in security programmes,

  • assistance in restoring defence capabilities.

However, the country is not ready to take on formal guarantees, The Ukrainian government should be able to take legal responsibility for intervening in the event of new aggression.

Context.

Finland is one of the countries that actively supports Ukraine with military assistance, and after joining NATO, it became an important part of the Alliance's northern flank.

The appearance of Helsinki in the Trump plan, which includes a list of guarantor states for a potential peace formula, was a surprise to the Finnish side.
