Pope Leo XIV called for one day of peace for Christmas and commented on the strikes on Ukraine

Vatican City. Pope Leo XIV reiterated his call to the international community to respect the at least one day of peace on the occasion of the holiday Merry Christmas.

«I once again appeal to all people of good will to observe at least one day of peace on the feast of the birth of the Saviour,» the pontiff said.

Reaction to the attacks on Ukraine

The head of the Roman Catholic Church also commented massive Russian strikes on the regions of Ukraine, expressed deep concern about the escalation of violence.

According to him, it is particularly worrying that, Russia may have rejected a request for a Christmas truce, despite calls for a humanitarian pause in the fighting.

The Vatican's calls for a temporary ceasefire are traditionally made on the eve of major Christian holidays. However, this year's appeal came amid intensified Russian strikes on Ukraine's civilian and energy infrastructure.
