China plans to dominate global trade even after Trump

China has stepped up its strategic efforts to strengthen its role in global trade and reduce its dependence on the economic influence of the United States, which has previously imposed a number of tariffs and trade restrictions. This is stated in the agency's investigation Reuters.

What Beijing is doing

Analysts and Chinese experts point out that the country uses instability in global trade, which intensified after the US tariff policy under the Donald Trump, to its advantage. As part of this strategy, China:

  • is actively signing new trade agreements with at least 20 countries, including the EU and Canada;

  • expands its participation in large trading blocks, such as CPTPP and other regional agreements;

  • promotes infrastructure projects and increases digital trade to influence global standards.

According to observers, these steps are aimed at reducing the vulnerability of the Chinese economy to external shocks and creating a new multilateral trading order with Beijing in the centre.

Why it matters

The agreement between China and Canada to reduce tariffs on electric vehicles was one of the first significant steps in this long-term strategy. Chinese strategists believe: no need to interrupt the opponent's weakness - it is profitable to take advantage of it.

In addition, Beijing is strengthening its influence through attempts to engage the European Union and the Persian Gulf countries in cooperation. These steps are bringing the Chinese economy closer and closer to the trade rules of the world's leading markets.

Prospects and risks

Despite the ambition, some Western politicians and economists are cautious about China's strategy because of the

  • high trading China's surplus and weak domestic demand;

  • concerns about unequal access of foreign companies to the Chinese market;

  • tensions with the West amid technological competition.

If Beijing's strategy succeeds, it could to move the world's trade centre of gravity to Asia, The newly-established China-Pacific Economic Cooperation (CPEC) has put China in an even stronger position on the international stage.
