NABU’s internal investigation
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has announced an investigation concerning one of its staff members. According to the Internal Control Department, circumstances have come to light that may indicate the employee’s involvement in the illegal smuggling of persons across Ukraine’s state border. In light of this, a pre-trial and internal investigation has been launched.
A NABU staff member has been suspended from their duties whilst an investigation is ongoing. The agency emphasised that it adheres to a policy of zero tolerance towards any form of unlawful conduct on the part of its staff.
“Once the investigation has been completed, a decision will be taken in accordance with the requirements of current legislation,” the Bureau stated.
Circumstances of the case
At present, only the fact that an investigation is underway has been officially confirmed. The NABU is not disclosing the name of the employee or the details of the alleged scheme so as not to jeopardise the investigation. At the same time, claims are circulating on social media and certain Telegram channels regarding possible individuals involved in the case, which have not yet been confirmed by the official law enforcement agencies.
This case is of particular interest as it concerns an employee of one of Ukraine’s key anti-corruption bodies. The findings of the internal and pre-trial investigations should establish whether any offences were committed and whether the employee will be held accountable should the allegations be confirmed.
