NABU and SAPO expose head of parliamentary faction on bribery of MPs

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office exposed the head of a parliamentary faction of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for offering illegal benefits to MPs.

This is reported by the «Ukrainska Pravda» with reference to sources in law enforcement agencies.

What the defendant is suspected of

According to the investigation, the head of the faction offered bribes MPs from other parliamentary factions for voting «for» or «against» specific draft laws.

Preliminary legal qualification of the case ч. 4 Art. 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (offering or giving an undue advantage to an official on a particularly large scale or by an organised group).

If the official is found guilty faces up to 8 years in prison with confiscation of property and a ban on holding certain positions.


Context.

The anti-corruption agencies have repeatedly stated that the fight against political corruption, in particular, illegal influence on the legislative process in the Verkhovna Rada, is a priority.

Cases involving bribery of MPs are considered to be one of the most serious forms of corruption, directly undermining democratic institutions.
