Rada proposes to ban debt collection from military during martial law
The Verkhovna Rada has registered a draft law that proposes a complete moratorium on the collection of credit debts from military personnel and their families during martial law.
The essence of the initiative
The document prohibits banks, microfinance organisations and collection companies from demanding repayment of debts from a certain category of citizens.
It is a temporary protection of the military and their families from financial pressure in times of war.
Duration of the moratorium
As proposed by MPs, the restrictions will remain in place:
throughout the entire period of martial law;
for another six months after its completion.
Context.
During the full-scale war in Ukraine, some credit concessions were already introduced for military personnel.
The new initiative is intended to expand the financial protection mechanisms for those involved in the country's defence, but the draft law is yet to be considered by the parliament.
