South Korea has made a sharp diplomatic response to Japan's actions regarding the disputed Dokdo Islands (Takeshima). This was reported by Reuters.
Details of the situation
The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned a representative of the Japanese Embassy and lodged an official protest over a government event in Japan dedicated to territorial claims.
Seoul stressed that the islands are an integral part of Korean territory from a historical, geographical and legal point of view.
Japan, in turn, continues to insist on its sovereignty over these territories.
Context.
The islands, known as Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan, are under Seoul's control, but Tokyo officially disputes this status.
The territorial dispute between the two countries has been going on for decades and regularly leads to diplomatic tensions, despite the strategic partnership between both countries and the United States.
