Spain warns US of dangerous escalation of war with Iran
Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez harshly criticised the actions of the United States and Israel in the war against Iran, warning of the dangerous consequences of escalating the conflict.
In a televised address, he said that the world was facing a serious threat and that political decisions could not put the lives of millions of people at risk.
«This is how the great catastrophes of mankind begin. You can't play Russian roulette with the fate of millions,» Sanchez said.
The Spanish government reaffirmed its position: the country is against the war and calls for a diplomatic settlement of the conflict.
Conflict with Trump
Sanchez's statement came after US President Donald Trump threatened terminate trade relations with Spain because of Madrid's position on the war with Iran.
Tensions between NATO allies have risen after Spain's refused to allow the US military to use the Rota and Moron bases for operations related to strikes on Iran.
After the Madrid decision, the United States was forced to move some of its aircraft from Spanish bases to other European countries, This has become one of the most serious diplomatic conflicts between the two countries in recent years.
«No to war»
Sánchez stressed that Spain's position can be summed up in words: «No to war».
He said that the government would not support military action that could cause new global crises, from terrorism to energy shocks like those that occurred after the war in Iraq.
According to the Spanish prime minister, international conflicts should be resolved through diplomacy, not bombing.
