Italy to deploy air defences to protect Cyprus amid Iranian threat

The Italian government is preparing to deploy air defence units to the Eastern Mediterranean region amid a sharp escalation of the situation between Iran and Western allies.

According to the Italian Ministry of Defence, the main goal of the mission will be to strengthen the protection of Cyprus' airspace, which may be at risk in the event of further escalation of the conflict.

In coordination with partners across Europe Rome will act together with France and Spain. It is expected that these countries will form a joint defence loop to deter possible missile or drone attacks in the region.

What systems can be deployed

Italy may send mobile air defence systems designed to intercept missiles, drones and other airborne targets.

Such systems are capable of providing multi-level protection for strategic facilities, military bases and civilian infrastructure.

The decision on specific systems and the number of units to be deployed to the region has not yet been officially disclosed.

The context of escalation

Tensions in the Middle East rose sharply after a series of mutual attacks between Iran, Israel and the United States. Against this background, European countries began to strengthen their military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Earlier, Spain announced that it would send a frigate to the Cyprus area to take part in a defence mission. France is also stepping up its military activity in the region.

Analysts believe that the deployment of European air defence systems could become an important element of deterrence in the event of further escalation of the conflict.
