President of the United States Donald Trump said that the United States could end trade relations with Spain because of Madrid's «lack of cooperation». The US leader also called Spain a «failure» and accused its authorities of a «hostile attitude» to NATO.
Conflict over defence spending
According to Trump, the main reason for the tension was the Spanish government's refusal to increase defence spending in line with NATO standards.
The US President said that allies must fulfil their commitments to the Alliance and make a greater contribution to collective security.
Criticism over position on Iran
Separately, Trump criticised Madrid's position on the military operation against Iran.
According to him, the Spanish authorities did not support the US actions aimed at containing Tehran.
Context.
Spain has long been under pressure from NATO allies for its relatively low level of defence spending compared to the recommended 2% of GDP.
Trump's statements came against the backdrop of an escalating international situation in the Middle East and discussions within the Alliance about the allies' participation in new military operations.
