ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih announced massive layoffs due to a complete halt in exports to the EU. The reason was the CBAM environmental duty, which deprived the company of orders and forced it to close key workshops. The plant's management is calling on the Ukrainian government to seek a delay in the CBAM.

CBAM stopped exports of ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih completely stopped exporting steel products to the European Union due to the introduction of the CBAM eco-duty. The new rules for Ukraine came into effect without any delays, so European customers cancelled all orders.

Mass layoffs and shop closures

CEO Mauro Longobardo said that the company had lost orders for almost half of the products it had planned to produce in 2026. The blooming shop has already been closed, and the foundry is now shutting down. These decisions have affected more than 3,000 employees who have lost their jobs.

Call to the government to postpone CBAM

Mauro Longobardo called on the Ukrainian government to work more actively with the EU to postpone the CBAM eco-duty. He stressed that the funds that were supposed to be used for «green» modernisation were used to cover the damage caused by the war. In his opinion, Ukraine is entitled to a postponement for at least three years.
