Polish police have detained a 19-year-old Ukrainian citizen suspected of extorting $270,000 from a local pensioner through an investment scam.

Details of the detention

According to police, a 19-year-old Ukrainian woman was detained while trying to receive another tranche of cash from an elderly man. Criminal investigation operatives intervened when she tried to take about $188,000.

The first time, the girl received approximately $80,000 from the pensioner, after which the fraud continued.

Investment scam scheme

The offenders convinced the pensioner to invest his savings in a non-existent financial project. The Ukrainian woman acted as a courier, receiving the money personally.

The victim lost all her savings due to the promise of a quick profit, which turned out to be a fiction.

Legal qualifications

Polish law enforcement officers charged the detainee with participating in a large-scale fraud scheme. Under the current legislation of the country, she faces up to 10 years in prison.

The investigation is ongoing, and the police are checking the possible involvement of other people in the crime. Similar fraudulent schemes have been recorded in the region on several occasions.
