The Centre for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine has refuted fakes about the existence of so-called «death factories» in Ukraine. Russian propaganda spreads false information about the torture of Russian prisoners of war, but these statements are not true.

Official position of the CPA

Centre for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine said., The Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (CHRD) said that the information about the alleged existence of «death factories» in Ukraine is another fake of Russian propaganda. According to the CPJ, these reports are not based on any confirmed facts and use the classic technique of mirror projection.

The Centre stressed that Russia is trying to attribute its own practices to Ukraine, describing the system of detention of prisoners of war and torture that actually exists in the occupied territories and in Russia itself.

Data from international organisations

According to the Centre, the United Nations has documented cases of torture or ill-treatment in at least 114 official places of detention in the occupied territories of Ukraine. It also recorded 73 places of detention in Russia, where civilian Ukrainians were deported.

This data confirms that it was the Russian side that created the extensive network of detention facilities, not Ukraine, as Russian propaganda tries to present.

Testimonies of released Ukrainian prisoners of war

The institution reminded that Ukrainian prisoners of war released have repeatedly provided detailed testimonies of torture and ill-treatment by Russian forces. This once again refutes Russian fakes and highlights the real scale of violations by the Russian Federation.

Earlier, the CPJ has already recorded waves of disinformation, in particular regarding payments to Ukrainians from international organisations.
