EU to introduce biometric entry/exit system EES from 12 October

On 12 October, the European Union will launch a new electronic entry/exit control system - the Entry/Exit System (EES).
It will replace passport stamps with digital records and biometric data of all travellers crossing the Schengen area.

What will change for Ukrainians

After the launch of EES passports will no longer be stamped manually - All data will be stored in a common EU database.
The system is automatic:

• will record date and place of border crossing;

• will keep biometric data (fingerprints and photos);

• will control length of stay in the EU (90-day rule within 180).

«The EES will allow for faster entry processing and prevent overstaying in Schengen,» the European Commission said in an official statement.

Who is affected by the changes

The system will work for everyone third-country nationals, travelling to the EU without a visa or on a short-term Schengen visa, in particular for citizens of Ukraine.
EES is being introduced in all Schengen countries, including Poland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the Baltic States.

Why is this done

The EU explains that the purpose of the system is to improving security, reducing bureaucracy and automating border control.
The EES will also help to identify people who violate migration rules or stay in the EU for longer than the permitted period.
