Ukraine received a unique replica of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky's battle banner from Sweden. It was handmade by Swedish craftsmen and handed over during the visit of Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga to the Kingdom of Sweden. Sibiga stressed that this event is important for the restoration of the national historical heritage. The transfer of the artefact was the result of an agreement with Swedish counterpart Maria Stenergard reached last year in Uzhhorod.
History of the Hetman's battle banner
Hetman's battle banner Bohdan Khmelnytsky has a special significance for Ukrainian history. After the Battle of Berestechko in 1651, the original flag was lost. Later, during the Great Northern War, the banner was taken to Sweden as a military trophy and has been kept there for several centuries.
The process of creating and transferring a replica
The banner replica was made by hand Swedish masters especially for Ukraine. The transfer took place during the official visit of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrey Sibiga to the Kingdom of Sweden. The agreement on this initiative was reached last year in Uzhhorod during a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden Maria Stenergard. Sibiga thanked the Swedish side for the implementation of joint plans and stressed the importance of returning historical symbols.
Significance for Ukrainian heritage
У Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine emphasise that the return of the replica of the battle banner is not only a symbolic gesture, but also a step towards restoration historical memory. The initiative is part of a broader policy implemented by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to return historical artefacts and preserve national heritage. As Sibiga noted, today Ukraine is bringing back an important artefact from oblivion that should unite society and remind us of the past.
Next steps and cooperation
The transfer of the replica of Khmelnytskyi's battle banner was another example of cooperation between Ukraine and Sweden in the field of culture and history. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine hopes that such initiatives will continue in the future, contributing to the return and promotion of Ukrainian heritage at the international level.
