In early summer, Ukraine celebrates one of the most important family holidays - Father's Day. It is a special occasion to express gratitude, respect and love to men who raise, protect and support their families. This holiday has gained particular significance in today's context, when thousands of Ukrainian fathers are defending the country and their families at the frontline.

What is Father's Day in Ukraine in 2026?

The date of the Father's Day celebration is flexible, as it is tied to a calendar day off. Traditionally, Ukraine, along with most countries in the world, celebrates this holiday on the third Sunday of June.

The official date: In 2026, Father's Day is celebrated in Ukraine 21 June.

It is worth noting that the Ukrainian calendar has another date - the National Father's Day, which is unofficially celebrated on the third Sunday of September (in 2026 it will be 20 September). However, it is the June holiday that is official at the state level.

Will there be an extra day off?

Because Father's Day always falls on a Sunday and does not include an additional day of rest on Monday. In addition, due to the legal regime of martial law in Ukraine, all additional days off for the period of holidays have been cancelled. Therefore, Monday, 22 June, will be a normal working day.

History of the holiday: from the USA to Ukraine

The idea of creating a separate day to honour parents was born in the United States in the early twentieth century.

  • 1910: The holiday was initiated by an American woman Sonora Smart Dodd from the city of Spokane. She wanted to express her gratitude to her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone after his wife's death. The holiday was first celebrated on 19 June 1910.

  • 1966: President of the United States Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June the official Father's Day.

  • 2019: Ukraine has officially joined the international tradition. On 8 May 2019, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine supported Presidential Decree No. 274/2019, which officially established Father's Day with the aim of «raising the status of men as fathers in the process of raising children».
