No bilateral meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy at the G7
President of the United States Donald Trump will take part in a working session G7 together with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the French town of Evian from 15 to 17 June. However, according to a senior US administration official, Trump has no plans for a bilateral meeting with the Ukrainian president. Instead, he will hold separate talks with the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and India.
The state of hostilities and the US assessment
A senior US official has stated that the advance of Russian troops in Ukraine has «more or less come to a halt». He emphasised the US side’s desire to bring the war to an end as soon as possible. The Ukrainian military has carried out strikes on Russian military and energy facilities in various regions of Russia, including the Krasnodar Krai and the Volgograd Oblast.
According to reports from local authorities in the Krasnodar Krai, a drone from Ukraine struck a maritime terminal, causing a fire and the death of one person; three others were injured. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed strikes on oil refineries and pumping stations in the Volgograd region, as well as on Russian positions in the occupied territories of Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant following repairs
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that power had been restored to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant following repairs carried out under a local ceasefire. This marks the 19th instance of the plant’s external power supply being cut off since the start of the war. The longest outage lasted almost three days, during which the plant operated on emergency diesel generators required to cool the reactors.
The international context and prospects
The absence of a bilateral meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy could affect the diplomatic tone of the G7 talks. However, Ukraine’s active participation in military operations and support from the international community remain crucial. The assessment by US officials that the Russian offensive has been halted indicates a shift in the dynamics of the conflict, which may influence further political decisions at the summit.
