President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine needs time, technological assistance from its allies and funding to counter Russian jet drones. At a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Calgary, he said that 60 companies are working on interceptor systems, but their large-scale production requires resources.

Briefly about the main points

  • Ukraine is developing weapons to engage high-speed jet-powered UAVs.
  • Sixty companies are working on these solutions.
  • When the threat first emerged, there was a shortage of tools designed for such purposes.
  • Kyiv is offering its allies the chance to share expertise on countering drones.
  • Funding is required for the large-scale production of interceptors.

Jet-powered drones have become a particular problem due to the speed of the targets

The issue of Russia’s use of jet-powered «shahids» Zelensky raised the issue during a conversation with the Canadian Prime Minister. The President described them as part of Russia’s escalation and linked them to the strikes which, he said, Russia strikes shopping centres, railways, the energy sector and ports in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy stated that, when this new threat first emerged, Ukraine did not have sufficient means to destroy high-speed targets. He said that this issue would be resolved.

The President also described the Russian attacks as a «Russian terrorist war».

Ukraine is counting on technology and funding for interceptors

According to the head of state, 60 companies are working on solutions to combat jet-powered drones. He emphasised that the development and implementation of such measures take time.

Ukraine is ready to share its experience in countering drones with its partners, Mr Zelenskyy said. At the same time, Kyiv needs technology and assistance in developing interceptors for jet-powered UAVs.

The President specifically emphasised the need for funding: the technologies alone are not enough, as thousands of drones need to be produced to counter jet-powered drones. Zelenskyy called on partners to work together on this every day.
