The Shatsk Lakes: a popular holiday destination
The Shatsk Lakes, situated in the Volyn Oblast, attract thousands of tourists every year. It is a picturesque area home to Ukraine’s largest freshwater lake – Lake Svityaz. However, before planning your holiday, it is important to know what documents you may need.
What documents are required for a holiday?
The Shatsk community, where these lakes are situated, is located in the border zone but not within the border strip. This means that no special permits are required to stay in the area. Tourists planning to visit the Shatsk Lakes need only have a passport or ID card. Men of conscription age, between 18 and 60 years old, must also carry a military registration document.
Permission to go for walks in the woods
The situation is different if tourists wish to walk through woodland areas outside the settlement. In that case, they must obtain permission to enter the border zone by applying to the State Border Service. This requirement is set out in Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 1147 of 27 July 1998, as amended on 7 December 2023 No. 1292.
The importance of knowing the rules
Tourists should bear in mind that swimming in Lake Svityaz, renting a cottage or strolling along the lakeside promenade are all permitted without the need for any special documents. However, entering forest areas outside the settlement without a permit may result in fines. It is therefore important to follow the rules and ensure you have the necessary documents before visiting the Shatsk Lakes.
