On the night of 16 July, Russian forces attacked Kyiv with ballistic missiles. In the Sviatoshynskyi district, a strike on a warehouse complex was recorded, whilst in the Darnytskyi district, missile debris fell on a non-residential development. The capital’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported on the initial consequences; the Air Force had warned of high-speed targets heading towards the city.

Briefly about the main points

  • Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv during the night.
  • In the Svyatoshynskyi district, a strike on some warehouse premises was recorded.
  • In the Darnytskyi district, debris fell onto a non-residential building.
  • The Air Force had warned of high-speed targets heading for the capital.
  • The number and type of missiles used in the strike are currently being clarified.

Explosions were heard after the alarm was sounded

An air raid alert was declared in Kyiv due to the threat of ballistic weapons being used. The Ukrainian Air Force reported high-speed targets heading towards the capital.

The first explosions were heard shortly after the air-raid siren sounded. During the attack, the Air Force reported, in particular, that four missiles were simultaneously heading towards Kyiv.

The impact in the Sviatoshyn and Darnytsia districts

According to the report Vitali Klitschko, a strike hit some warehouse premises in the Sviatoshynskyi district. Units from the State Emergency Service were working at the scene.

In the Darnytskyi district, rocket debris fell on a site with non-residential buildings.

The type and number of missiles are still being determined

Monitoring sources reported that Russia may have fired up to ten missiles at Kyiv over a period of approximately 20 minutes. However, at the time of the initial reports, there was no official confirmation regarding the number and type of weapons used.

It is therefore wrong to attribute the attack solely to complexes С-400 It is too early to say: the media have also reported the possibility of «Iskander-M» missiles being used. The Air Force Command is due to release the final figures.

The second ballistic attack in two nights

The night before, on the night of 15 July, Russia also fired ballistic missiles at Kyiv. On that occasion, the Air Force reported that five such missiles had been intercepted.

A second strike the following night indicates that the threat to the capital remains high. During a ballistic missile attack, the interval between the warning and the explosions can be very short, so an air-raid siren requires an immediate response.
