The 2026 Ambassadors’ Conference has begun in Kyiv. Its participants visited the site of the Russian attacks in Lukyanivka and paid tribute to the fallen heroes on Independence Square, Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga said. The guest of honour at the conference was Mihai Popșoi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Moldova.

From the realities of war to diplomatic work
Sybiga stated that it is important for every Ukrainian ambassador to see the consequences of Russian aggression with their own eyes. According to him, this should help diplomats to be a strong voice for Ukraine in every capital and at every international headquarters.
Lukyanivka had previously been among the districts of Kyiv affected by Russian attacks. The Ministry of Community and Territorial Development reported that on 24 May An X-101 missile struck a five-storey residential block on Degtyarivska Street, causing the most damage in the area.
Visits to the sites of the strikes continue the practice that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs followed last year: ahead of the 2025 meeting, Ukrainian ambassadors visited Zaporizhzhia, the Zaporizhzhia region and the Orikhiv district.
Peace, leadership and the Moldovan dimension
This year’s conference theme focuses on restoring peace and Ukraine’s leadership. Sibiga said that participants are looking forward to productive and substantive working sessions.
Popșoi’s presence could lend the meeting a regional dimension. As Moldova’s Foreign Minister, he will chair the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in 2026; Chisinau has identified support for Ukraine, Russia’s responsibility for the aggression and the promotion of a just and lasting peace as the priorities of its chairmanship.
The meeting is taking place against the backdrop of Ukraine’s progress towards the EU: On 15 July, the European Union opened accession negotiations on the external relations policy cluster. From an editorial perspective, this suggests that the combination of ‘peace and leadership’ in the slogan may encompass diplomatic engagement with partners, security support and European integration all at once.
A practical approach to diplomatic coordination
Meetings of the heads of diplomatic missions abroad are an annual working format of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2025, the Ministry set out its objectives as assessing the work carried out in each country, reviewing bilateral relations and translating diplomatic activity into concrete results — in particular, defence, humanitarian and economic support, as well as consular protection for citizens.
Last year’s meeting concluded with the announcement of a new foreign policy strategy, the expansion of the diplomatic network in Latin America and the opening of new consular offices. This demonstrates that such meetings can serve as a platform not only for discussing current challenges, but also for management decisions within the diplomatic service.
