On the night of 19 August, Russian forces attacked Zaporizhzhia with drones. One man was killed and seven others were injured as a result of the strikes. Fires broke out in a hostel and a furniture shop in the city, and a block of flats was also damaged. Rescue workers and other emergency services were at the scenes of the strikes.
One person has been killed in Zaporizhzhia following a night-time attack
On the night of 19 August, Russian forces launched drone strikes on Zaporizhzhia. Hits were recorded at several locations in the regional capital.
A man was killed in the attack. Rescue workers had to extricate his body from the rubble of one of the damaged buildings.
According to preliminary reports, a further seven people have been injured. The injured are receiving the necessary medical treatment.
The final number of casualties is still being confirmed, so the figures on the consequences of the night-time attack may change.
A Russian drone struck a hostel
One of the strikes caused damage and a fire in the hostel building.
The fire broke out on the second floor and spread over an area of around 50 square metres. During the emergency rescue operation, State Emergency Service personnel discovered the body of a deceased man under the rubble and recovered it.
Rescue workers put out the fire and continued to inspect the damaged structures.
Russian attacks on Zaporizhzhia The attacks have remained intense in recent days. Yesterday, another UAV strike on a residential area of the city also resulted in fatalities.
A fire broke out at a furniture shop
Another strike occurred at a different address. There, a furniture shop caught fire following the Russian strike.
The fire covered an area of around 100 square metres. Units from the State Emergency Service contained and completely extinguished the blaze.
In addition, a two-storey block of flats was damaged as a result of the attack. The blast wave and flying debris damaged the windows and the roof of the building.
All the fires caused by the night-time strikes have been extinguished.
Zaporizhzhia is regularly under attack from the Russian Federation
Over the past few weeks, Zaporizhzhia has been repeatedly targeted by Russian missile, air and drone attacks.
On 11 August, Russia launched a large-scale combined attack on the city using missiles and guided aerial bombs. Apartment blocks, non-residential buildings and industrial infrastructure were damaged as a result.
On the night of 19 August, the main damage recorded was to civilian premises — a hostel, a shop and a residential building.
