There are around 5,000 sailors on board, and the stopover comes amid reports of deteriorating living conditions, mental health issues and suicide attempts amongst the crew. A week before the ship’s arrival, the police arrested 25 women for soliciting customers on the beach promenade. The mayor denied that the raid was linked to the visit by American military personnel.

Pattaya was a holiday destination for American military personnel even during the Vietnam War. According to a lecturer at Bangkok University Pipatpong Fakfare, the presence of Americans was one of the factors that transformed the former fishing village into an international nightlife hub.

The US side also described the port call as an opportunity to reaffirm the partnership between the US and Thailand. Following a brief stop, the USS Abraham Lincoln is due to leave the port on Sunday.
