The 750 kV «Kyivska» substation under attack: what does this mean for the capital?

The «Kyivska» substation forms part of the main grid through which nuclear-generated electricity is transmitted to the central region.

On the evening of 1 October, Russia once again attacked the energy infrastructure in the Kyiv region. According to reports from monitoring sources, one of the targets was the 750 kV «Kyivska» substation, through which one of the key high-voltage power lines runs from the Rivne Nuclear Power Station to the central region and the capital.

Why is the «Kyivska» substation so important?

The 750 kV «Kyivska» substation forms part of Ukraine’s main power transmission infrastructure. It was specifically to transmit power from the Rivne and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power stations that the high-voltage transmission line project was implemented at the time Rivne Nuclear Power Station — Kyiv as part of the substation expansion. Official government documents state that the length of this line is approximately 346 km.

The 750 kV Rivne NPP–Kyivska Substation transmission line was commissioned in December 2015. It boosted the transmission of nuclear-generated electricity to the central part of the power system and reduced the power shortfall in the Kyiv region.

Therefore, a strike against such a facility does not automatically mean a complete power cut in the capital; however, damage to it could hamper the transmission of large volumes of electricity and force dispatchers to reconfigure the power supply network.

Russia has already tried to strike at this energy hub

The «Kyivska» substation has already been mentioned in reports of Russian attacks. In February 2026, monitoring sources reported a strike on this same facility in the Bucha district. It was also emphasised at the time that the substation carries the power lines connecting the Rivne Nuclear Power Station to Kyiv and the central part of the country. No official data on the extent of the damage had been released at that time.

The current attack is taking place against the backdrop of a new a series of blows to the Ukrainian energy sector. Over the last few days, Russian forces have attacked thermal power stations, substations and high-voltage power lines, including facilities that supply electricity to Kyiv.

Energy expert Stanislav Ignatiev He had previously explained that a significant proportion of the power supplied to the capital region comes via high-voltage transmission lines connected to the Rivne Nuclear Power Station. In his view, attacks on such power lines may be aimed at disrupting the power supply to certain parts of Kyiv and fragmenting the power system into less resilient segments.

Calls have already been made in Kyiv to save electricity

Following the previous attacks, Ukrenergo reported that as of the morning of 1 October, hourly outage schedules are not in force across the country. At the same time, the company has urged residents Kyiv, the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions are to reduce their electricity consumption in the evening, between 17:00 and 22:00.

Such requests indicate that the power system is operating with limited resilience following a series of attacks, and repairs to the damaged facilities are ongoing.

The ultimate impact of the current attack will depend on whether the main high-voltage equipment, autotransformers or the lines leading to the substation have been damaged.
